India’s Shifting Global Trade Dynamics, Emerging Export Markets, and Scrutiny at the WTO

Published

India’s global trade engagement is witnessing a transformation, marked by significant growth in high-value exports and increased international scrutiny. India’s manufactured exports to China have recorded a sharp growth of nearly 40 percent during the first five months through August. This growth has been primarily propelled by high electronics shipments, such as printed circuit board assemblies, smartphones, display modules, and telecom equipment, driven by global demand for AI infrastructure and data centers. Simultaneously, Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port City is actively targeting Indian businesses as an “India-plus-one” services hub for offshore operations, offering strategic tax advantages, single-window clearances, and flexibility to trade in Indian Rupees. However, as India rapidly expands its economic footprint and approaches the target of becoming a multi-trillion-dollar economy, it faces rising scrutiny at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Member nations are closely questioning India’s domestic regulatory choices, quality control orders (QCOs), minimum support price frameworks, and sudden import/export restrictions. Trading partners claim these measures create unpredictability across global value chains, urging India to ensure greater policy consistency while balancing its developmental and domestic food security objectives.
