Lithium Batteries Cause Explosion on Yang Ming Ship

Published

A container carrying lithium batteries and a flammable compound exploded on a Yang Ming ship in Ningbo, China. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, resulting in no injuries to crew members or staff.

Preliminary investigations by Chinese authorities revealed that the container contained lithium batteries and tert-Butyl peroxybenzoate, a highly flammable and explosive substance. The container was a refrigerated container being used as a dry container, despite not requiring a power connection.

Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming confirmed the explosion and stated that the cause was still under investigation. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
