Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced the nation’s first Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) under the ‘Sagar Aankalan Framework’ during the 37th Foundation Day celebrations of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. This national benchmarking system is fully aligned with major developmental initiatives including the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, Maritime India Vision 2030, and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to foster a transparent and highly competitive maritime ecosystem across India’s major transit hubs. The index evaluates port productivity across three distinct cargo categories, Dry Bulk, Liquid Bulk, and Container Cargo., by tracking critical operational parameters such as total cargo handled, vessel turnaround time, berth idle time, pre-berthing waiting time, and container dwell time. In this inaugural 2024-25 edition, Paradip Port Authority topped the Dry Bulk category, Sikka Port and Terminals led the Liquid Bulk segment, and Mundra Port secured the first position in Container Cargo, while JNPA achieved an impressive second place among major container gateways. This standardized framework is designed to drive continuous year-on-year improvements, boosting India’s global logistics standing where the country has already jumped from 44th to 22nd rank in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index for international shipments, alongside seven Indian ports featuring in the top 100 of the Container Port Performance Index 2024.
