A major fire broke out at a petrochemical facility operated by Haldia Petrochemicals in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, leaving at least 20 people injured, with five in critical condition. The incident occurred due to a leak in a high-pressure naphtha pipeline, a highly flammable petroleum product used in fuel and chemical manufacturing. The flames quickly spread to nearby residential areas before emergency teams brought the situation under control using 12 fire engines. The injured, including factory workers and security personnel, were shifted to nearby hospitals for immediate treatment. Haldia Petrochemicals has launched an investigation to identify the root cause of the pipeline breach. The event underlines the critical need for strict safety protocols and robust containment infrastructure when handling and transporting hazardous chemical liquids.
