The Mormugao Port Authority has officially reintroduced container shipment services, a move designed to support exporters from the North Karnataka region. Chairperson N Vinodkumar announced the service at a trade promotion meet in Hubballi, noting that the port is now ideally positioned to export perishable items, food, beverages, and delicate goods to international markets.
The port had previously halted container shipments for several years due to technical issues but has now upgraded its facilities through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). North Karnataka is a critical region for the port, as a significant portion of its export volume, particularly iron ore, originates from this part of the state.
Additionally, exporters were encouraged to leverage the various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) India has signed with over 21 countries to expand their global footprint. While Karnataka currently leads India with 41% of total exports, 35% of that is currently in services; the government is now focused on increasing merchandise exports to 15% over the next decade.
