“Mother of All Trade Deals”: India and EU Finalize Mega FTA Timeline for End of 2026

Published

Following intensive high-level diplomatic discussions at the G7 Summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that India and the European Union are officially on track to sign their highly anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026. Widely referred to as the “mother of all trade deals,” this massive economic pact represents a historic convergence between two markets that collectively encompass nearly a quarter of worldwide GDP. Technical negotiations were initially concluded in January, and both sides are now fast-tracking legal implementation alongside a parallel bilateral investment agreement. The finalized framework is structured to completely eliminate or radically reduce customs tariffs on 99% of Indian goods entering the EU, while dropping duties on over 97% of European products arriving in India. This shift is projected to save European exporters an estimated €4 billion annually while boosting defense cooperation and the IMEC corridor.
