Multimodal Logistics Parks Cargo Transformation Freight Corridors Infrastructure Costs

Published

India’s domestic freight movement is projected to reach 28 billion tonnes annually by 2047, demanding a radical expansion of its cargo infrastructure. Currently, only 30 operational Multimodal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) handle 129 million metric tonnes per year, representing just 2% of total freight, though 45 more parks are under development. To successfully route 30% of rail freight traffic through mechanized hubs by 2047, India urgently requires a network of 215 mega MMLPs integrated with Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) and maritime ports. This structural integration will slash door-to-door transportation costs by up to 43% and drastically cut cargo dwell times from 34 to 152 hours at conventional sheds to just 2.5–8 hours, significantly boosting India’s global export competitiveness.
