Port Giants Expand Logistics Operations for Growth

Published

Leading Indian port operators—Adani Ports (APSEZ) and JSW Infrastructure—are aggressively expanding into the logistics sector to capture more cargo volume and provide integrated transport services. With fewer lucrative port assets left to acquire, the focus has shifted to upstream investments in multimodal logistics, warehousing, and cargo handling.

APSEZ operates 12 logistics parks, over 130 rakes, large warehouse spaces, thousands of containers, and road transport fleets. It also owns industrial land integrated with transport networks. The company aims to become a full-fledged transport utility with both physical and digital infrastructure like truck management systems and freight forwarding businesses.

JSW Infra has acquired Navkar Corporation and is exploring further acquisitions. It operates two Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals and aims to establish 15–20 such terminals over five years. With a target revenue of ₹8,000 crore from logistics by FY30 and a 25% EBITDA margin, the company plans to pursue an asset-light model. These strategies allow port majors to extract more value per customer by offering end-to-end cargo and supply chain solutions.
