Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), operator of the world’s busiest container gateway, has reported significant productivity gains following the wide-scale deployment of specialized artificial intelligence agents across its terminal operations. At the Waigaoqiao Phase I terminal, AI maintenance agents, trained on equipment schematics, electrical diagrams, and historical fault records, have reduced average equipment repair times by 20% while unlocking 10 to 15 additional servicing hours per month within tightly congested vessel schedules. Furthermore, an AI-powered container stowage system implemented at Yangshan Phase III now generates optimized loading plans for 6,000-container vessels in approximately 40 minutes, a task that previously required up to four hours of manual planning for 3,000 containers, while cutting unnecessary container rehandling during loading by 20.6%. Powered by SIPG’s unified “Lotus Seat” AI platform, the port operator is accelerating smart-terminal retrofits across its network to streamline vessel turnaround times and maximize quay throughput.
