Red Sea Tensions Ease: Maersk and MSC Resume Collaboration

Published

Following the initial separation of services between Maersk and MSC after the dissolution of the 2M alliance, the recent crisis in the Red Sea appears to be prompting renewed cooperation.

Prior to the pandemic, Maersk and MSC operated their Far East-Middle East and Indian Subcontinent services jointly. However, with the aim of increasing their market share, they separated most of their services in 2023. This separation reached near completion by early 2024.

The article highlights a shift in strategy due to the disruptions caused by attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Many vessels are being rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, significantly extending travel times. In response, MDS Transmodal data shows a marked increase in the number of joint Maersk and MSC services. This suggests that the shipping giants are prioritizing efficiency and reliability over individual market share during this period of instability.
