Shipping Giant Faces Hefty Fine for Overcharges

Published

The world’s largest shipping line, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is facing a potential penalty of USD 63 million from the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC). The FMC’s Bureau of Enforcement alleges that MSC overcharged clients on reefer container fees.

These alleged overcharges fall into two categories: excessive late fees applied to non-operating reefers and billing charges directed at unintended recipients not part of the original contractual agreement. The number of disputed charges is significant, with over 2,600 reefer overcharges and 1,700 undisputed reefer charges identified.

MSC is currently contesting the allegations. This situation highlights the importance of clear communication and adherence to agreed-upon pricing structures within the shipping industry.
