Singapore’s Tuas Port is set to increase its handling capacity to tackle extended waiting times for container ships. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has announced that three new berths will be operational later in 2024.
This expansion comes in response to a surge in vessel arrivals, partly caused by the diversion of ships away from the Red Sea due to recent tensions. The increased traffic has led to longer waiting times for container vessels seeking berths at Tuas Port. While some delays are unavoidable, the average wait time is currently around two to three days.
The addition of three new berths will significantly boost Tuas Port’s capacity and help alleviate congestion. This strategic move aims to maintain Singapore’s position as a key transshipment hub and ensure smooth cargo movement within the region.
