Soaring Freight Rates and West Asia Crisis Disrupt Indian Tea Exports and Boost Import GST

Published

Indian tea exports face severe headwinds and are projected to drop up to 20 percent year-on-year in 2026 due to skyrocketing freight costs and logistics bottlenecks linked to the West Asia conflict. Major export markets including Iraq, Iran, and Western Europe have seen demand drop as ocean freight rates surged over ten times. Paradoxically, the same West Asian conflict and rising global commodity prices helped drive India’s net GST collections to 1.77 trillion in September, reflecting an 18.1 percent annual growth powered mainly by import-linked taxes. Integrated GST (IGST) collections on imported goods jumped 26 percent to 65,525 crore, outstripping domestic tax growth and highlighting the financial impact of higher import costs and capital goods demand under national manufacturing drives.
