Strategic Partnership: India and Ethiopia Elevate Ties

Published

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Addis Ababa, India and Ethiopia decided to elevate their bilateral relationship to a “strategic partnership”. The visit focused on deepening economic cooperation in fields such as mining, critical minerals, clean energy, and digital public infrastructure (DPI). Currently, over 650 Indian companies are registered in Ethiopia, with total investments exceeding $5 billion.

A significant outcome of the visit was India’s offer to support Ethiopia under the G20 Common Framework for debt restructuring. Agreements were signed in several areas, including mutual administrative assistance in customs matters, UN peacekeeping training, and the establishment of a new data center. India also reaffirmed its support for Ethiopia’s accession to the World Trade Organization and its membership in the New Development Bank.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the partnership is focused on growth and people-centric development, specifically through ICCR scholarships and healthcare support for mothers and newborns. To honor the strengthening ties, Modi was awarded the “Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia,” the country’s highest civilian award. Both nations expressed shared faith in innovation and youth as the primary drivers of their future strategic collaboration.
