Tata Steel has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable shipping practices. The Indian steel giant recently completed the first-ever voyage from East Coast Australia to India using a biofuel blend to power the cape vessel “MV Cape XL.” This marks a major step towards reducing carbon emissions within their operations.
The “MV Cape XL” carried a full load of coal, traveling from Gladstone port in Australia to Kalinga International Coal Terminal Paradip Private Ltd. (KICTPPL) in India. Crucially, the vessel wasn’t powered by traditional Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), but by a B24 biofuel blend. This blend combines 24% used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) with 76% VLSFO, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative.
This achievement builds upon Tata Steel’s previous commitment to sustainability in shipping. In December 2021, they deployed the first biofuel-powered vessel for raw material transportation. Additionally, they have completed seven biofuel shipments in the previous fiscal year and are the first Indian company to utilize LNG-powered vessels for bulk carrier cargo transport.
