The Green Shipping Transition: Decarbonizing India’s Maritime Trade

Published

India is aggressively pursuing “Green Shipping” targets to align with international environmental standards by 2030. The Ministry of Shipping has mandated that major ports must derive at least 60% of their power from renewable sources like solar and wind. In tandem, the government is promoting the use of electric and hybrid-powered vessels for inland waterways, starting with the National Waterway-1 (Ganga). This shift is not just environmental but economic, as green-certified logistics chains are increasingly becoming a requirement for European and North American trade partners, ensuring Indian exports remain future-ready.
