Three influential US lawmakers have introduced a resolution in Congress to end the 50% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Indian goods. The resolution, led by Representatives Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, argues that the “irresponsible tariff strategy” weakens a critical partnership and harms American workers and consumers. They contend that these duties disrupt global supply chains and drive up costs without advancing US security interests.
The resolution specifically aims to terminate the national emergency used to authorize these tariffs and rescind the 25% “secondary” duties that targeted India’s purchases of Russian oil. Lawmakers stated that these measures collectively raised duties on many Indian-origin products to the highest in the world. Representative Ross highlighted that North Carolina’s economy is deeply connected to India, with manufacturers exporting hundreds of millions in pharmaceuticals and advanced machinery annually.
Ending these tariffs is described as part of a broader effort by congressional Democrats to reclaim constitutional authority over trade from the President. The lawmakers have urged a reset of US-India relations to allow for collaboration on shared economic and security needs. They noted that Indian companies have invested over a billion dollars in the US, creating thousands of jobs that are put at risk by current “illegal” tariff policies.
