Vizhinjam Port Phase-II Development to Begin in January

The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Seaport’s development is scheduled to be inaugurated in mid-January 2026. Kerala Port Minister V.N. Vasavan announced that the upcoming construction phases will involve an investment of ₹9,700 crore from the port concessionaire, Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd. (AVPPL). The expansion will increase the existing berth length from 800 meters to 2,000 meters and extend the breakwater by 920 meters.

Since launching commercial operations on December 3, 2024, the port has achieved several milestones:

  • Handled 13.25 lakh TEUs of cargo from 636 ships.
  • First Indian port to facilitate berthing for over 40 ultra-large container ships with lengths of 399 meters.
  • Facilitated over 45 vessels with drafts exceeding 16 meters.
  • Contributed approximately ₹297 crore in taxes to the public exchequer.

The inauguration will also include a new approach road from NH-66 to improve heavy vehicle movement. Future infrastructure includes an underground rail link to Balaramapuram station and the acquisition of 50 hectares for a storage yard and security posts. Additionally, the state government plans to reclaiming land from the sea to establish cruise tourism facilities at the port.
