Taiwanese carrier Wan Hai Lines has immediately suspended all cargo bookings destined for Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and other Central Asian countries passing through Pakistani ports, including self-arranged merchant transport. The decision follows the prolonged closure of critical Pakistan-Afghanistan border crossings, such as Torkham and Chaman, since October 2025 due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, which has left thousands of transit containers stranded and caused Afghan Transit Trade volumes via Pakistan to collapse. With major liners like CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd also restricting transit bookings, regional trade flows have shifted heavily toward Central Asian and Iranian corridors, driving container freight costs up from $2,000 to nearly $10,000 via alternative routes. Meanwhile, Indian exporters face compounding challenges as Chabahar Port operations remain constrained following the expiration of the US conditional sanctions waiver, forcing a growing share of high-value, time-sensitive cargo onto air freight channels.
