A new report from the World Shipping Council (WSC) reveals that over 10% of global container shipments have critical safety deficiencies, creating severe risks for maritime trade. Based on 93,079 inspections conducted across seven countries in 2025, common issues like misdeclared dangerous goods, improper packing, incorrect labeling, and poor cargo securing are driving a sharp rise in container losses and ship fires, which now occur every 17 days. With safety violations steadily climbing over the past decade and undeclared shipments of high-risk items like lithium-ion batteries rapidly increasing, the WSC is urging international maritime authorities to enforce stricter inspection protocols and plug regulatory gaps to protect ships and seafarers.
